"City Guide: Explore Jakarta" is a modern, visually engaging city guide designed to capture the metropolitan, history aspects and vibrant spirit of Jakarta for both tourists and locals. The project reimagines traditional travel guides by combining editorial design, illustration, typography, and user-centered layout systems. The aim is to present Jakarta not just as a destination, but as an experience—rich in culture, history, cuisine, and everyday life.

This project is to create an interactive and visually appealing guide that resonates with the target audience. Why would people need this city guide? Would this guide actually be handy for them? The guide should highlight the city's popular attractions such as main landmarks, food, street food, museums, and other necessary entertainment aspects without overlooking the important basis of why people should visit these places.

  • Research the unique attractions with historical and cultural basis that is associated with the city of Jakarta

  • Investigate the user experience of a city guide and how its utilitarianism affects the target audience

  • Create a visual identity that encompasses the elements of typography, graphics, and color scheme accross various media .

Capstone is a culminating and comprehensive graphic design project that showcases designer’s skills and knowledge in graphic design creative and ethics. The aim is to provide an opportunity to curate an interactive design or product that demonstrates designer’s design principles, problem-solving and project management.

Problem Statement

This project will explore several areas to implement graphic design applications through specific goals with designated target audience. The project itself will touch on several media both digital, physical and interactive deliverables. The whole processes from research to final design should give an opportunity for the designer for an experiential and hands-on experience in assembling their own independent study-like design process and curating the deliverables in a professional manner.

Initial Research

Initial research would take off from what is there to be displayed in a city guide in order to make it useful and actually 'guiding' people who decide to utilize it. Preliminary research has been done with some gathering information on what categories would be highlighted and deemed as 'important' from the perspective of people who are about to experience the city for the first time.

Problem Analysis

How to create a concise but informative guide. The guide should not be too text heavy but also incorporated with visualizations both illustrations and photographs with considerations:

  • Description for each place that encapsulates a brief history of the place and why it should be on the bucket list

  • Easy-navigate map with possible recommended transportations

  • Accessible to travelers who prefer digital and physical media

  • Handy size printed guide to be handed out

  • Additional deliverable that would help accomodate people in using the guide .

City Branding

I created a city branding for the City of Jakarta that represents the city officially. The visual communication consists of elemental shapes that derived from the city culture and architecture that portray the city’s lifestyle and vibes in general. The branding intends to craft a consistency and cohesiveness in representing the city’s marketing materials such as city guide, map and environmental mission.

Sustainability Initiative & Public Transportation

City of Jakarta has a city initiation that works towards sustainability goals. The city resolves heavily around air polution and water quality.

MRT (Mass Rapid Transportation) Jakarta cards and sustainability folds

THE GREEN E(MISSION) PROJECT

This large-scale project move towards the goals to resolve Jakarta’s air quality. Over the years, the air quality has fallen under the red zone and concerned the respiratory health of Jakartans. Green E(mission) Project works toward improving air quality, urban management and activities like CFD (Car Free Day) that boosts social engagement.
